Web Search--Meta Search Engines
Meta Search and Google

Especially important for those of you who do search training!
You probably already know that a majority of meta search engines do not provide results from Google. Why? According to a Google spokesperson, "Google's terms of service clearly states that meta engines cannot automatically grab results from Google. We're happy to let any metasearcher use us, under exactly the same terms that we're happy to sell results to other people, too. O.K., easy enough to understand. However, a few meta search engines claim to include Google results. This is not entirely accurate. I ran several searches (common terms) and limited the meta engine to only return Google material. What happened? Empty result sets.
Examples:
MetaCrawler (Google used to have a paid agreement)
||| MetaCrawler search limited to Google
Metor ||| Metor search limited to Google
Lexibot (an add-on app)
Limit to Google and receive zero results.
Bottom Line
In some cases, you may see Google results if the meta engine uses Yahoo. Google provides an abridged version of its database to Yahoo. I am currently reviewing other meta search tools and will report back. Finally, what you see is not always what you get. Make sure meta search tools deliver what they promise.

Web Tools--IHarvest
IHarvest To Discontinue Web Service
IHarvest allowed you to copy an entire web page and save it to a remote server for access from any web browser. Yesterday, the company announced it's discontinuing this free service. It will still offer products for the enterprise market. Another goody bites the dust. However, all hope is not lost. If this type of tool sounds useful to you take a look at Surfsaver.Com. It does not provide remote access but it can be useful for saving copies of web pages to computer. It's free, at least for the time being. An advanced version ($) is also available. Another option would be Webforia. Thanks to W.N. for the IHarvest news tip.

The Report, that was prepared by IFLA's Committee for Free Access to Information and Freedom of Expression (IFLA/FAIFE), intends to provide a picture on the status of libraries and intellectual freedom throughout the world. More than 140 countries have been contacted and 46 have submitted country reports, many of which illustrate cases of violation of free access to information and freedom of expression in libraries worldwide."

Web Search--FirstGov

"Is the FirstGov Playing Field Level?"
From the article, "The General Services Administration’s acceptance of the FirstGov search engine as a gift from philanthropist Eric Brewer “shelters all the information from current law.” Or so says David LeDuc, manager of public policy at the Software and Information Industry Association of Washington...The engine is performing more accurately today than a few months ago and it will continue to improve, said David Binetti, president of the FedSearch Foundation and creator of the search engine. The topics directory, however, still only goes two layers deep for most topics, LeDuc said. Binetti acknowledged that up to 15 percent of visitors don’t find what they’re looking for on the first try. But LeDuc said vendors that might supply more advanced search engines cannot provide adequate responses to GSA’s recent request for information about a new engine because they don’t have access to the back end—the search engine’s index and database."

Web Search--AltaVista
Source: PC World
Do You Use Any of AltaVista's Regional Search Tools? Be Careful!
From the article, Searching for a Web page that was created after mid-April this year? Better not try any of the 22 regional AltaVista search sites. No new Web pages have been added for months to the index behind the regional search sites, AltaVista confirmed on Tuesday. The local sites are supposed to generate search results relevant for Web users in a specific country. By default, all local sites search in the regional index...AltaVista says the index is outdated because the database that holds the regional URLs is being merged with the main international database...Ultimately the merger of the two indexes should result in a better search service, but the new Web index won't be ready for about another month..." Database refresh rates have been improving. Sadly, AV doesn't think it's important to let us know since they assume most webmasters know indexing takes time. Fine, but what about alerting the searcher, those people who depend on indexes to be fresh and current and don't understand refresh times? How about telling them to use another AV database that is being refreshed? From the article, "Most Web masters are aware that indexing pages takes time. Typically we update every six weeks. Now we've skipped a cycle because of the merge," says [Ian] Hegerty, [technical architect for AltaVista]. He offers no comment when it is pointed out that more than one cycle has been skipped, as it has been more than four months since new pages were added to the regional indexes." The Good News? Chris Sherman, editor of Search Day, has seen what AltaVista is developing for the future. He tells us, "I got a peek inside the kimono a few weeks ago when I visited their offices, and what I saw impressed me. They don't expect the new changes to be fully implemented for some time yet, but if they pull off what they're planning they're going to recapture some of their lost glory. That they haven't updated regional indexes recently isn't surprising -- they've endured major job cuts and have simply chosen to allocate resources toward the new functionality rather than worrying too much about maintaining the status quo. Net, I'm optimistic."

How Much Would You Pay to Perform an Internet Search?
I think many info professionals would be willing to pay for a robust, current, and sophisticated web search engine than is currently offered by many of the leading search companies. From the commentary, "Like so many things connected with the Internet, the availability of a variety of free search engines helps people forget the complexity, sophistication and cost of the technology that underlies them. It also encourages the average person to be somewhat fickle in using search engines. There's little brand loyalty here. If you hear about an engine that is faster and produces better results than the one you're now using, it costs you nothing to try it...Consequently, the search engine business has become something of a king-of-the-hill game with a succession of royalty. The question for search engine companies has become whether they can create a feasible business model before being knocked off the throne. AltaVista, for example, though it invested heavily in technology, did not succeed in transforming its technological leadership into general portal status."

Classification and Categorization

Source: E-Content
"Taxonomies and Topic Maps: Categorization Steps Forward"
From the article, "There are so many technologies, and so many approaches to the problem, that we may forget at times that the ultimate goal of search technology is simple–providing users with quick access to meaningful information. In the recent history of content management, much has been made of XML and the related standards, streaming media and Content Distribution Networks (CDNs), and the steady increases in performance through broadband options such as DSL and cable modems. Yet one of the biggest challenges the Web faces is one of its oldest, and indeed is a problem that predates the Web itself. How do average users find the information they need amidst a flood of irrelevant matter? And how do they do this quickly, easily, and consistently?"

Only a handful have generated enough revenue to cover the few hundred dollars it costs to convert their texts to digital formats...But however low their current sales, several publishers noted that some people do appear to be investigating electronic books. They have flocked to the University of Virginia Library's Electronic Text Center, for example, which provides electronic editions of classic books free. "Machines to Talk Intelligently on Web"
Dan Gillmor provides an overview to the Semantic Web. From the article, "You tell a search engine you're looking for a story on the gadget and want the contact information for anyone quoted in the article. This time, several computers communicate with each other and then present you with a list of names and numbers. You can't do the latter, yet. But technologists are working on what may be a key piece of the next generation of networks -- a ``Semantic Web'' where machines talk intelligently with other machines to solve all kinds of problems for you and me."

The number of people using search engines as a starting point has also decreased significantly, a reflection of the more direct, predetermined approach to the Web....What is lost, some say, is the experience of serendipity and the delight in finding things that you would not naturally seek out.

New From Google Groups: Enhanced Thread View Capabilities
Word today from the Googleplex (what Google employees call their office) that a new "enhanced threaded view" of Usenet postings is now availabe via the Google Groups service. From an email message, Google Groups users now have direct access to each message in a thread, from a hierarchical list of links to the left of the screen. This improvement enables users to directly jump to a message from a particular author, as opposed to scrolling through an entire page of individual postings. Google Groups users now also have access to the original, detailed header information for each posting. Message headers reveal such information as message ID#, the original posting host, and X-complaints information for abusive postings. To see detailed header information for a particular posting contained in the Google Groups archive, select "view article only," then select "original format."

"Do Search Engines Tell The Truth?"
As I have said several times, it's crucial to:
1) Know that paid placement/inclusion exists.
2) Keep current with changes and new tools.
3) Understand that search engine optimization exists and is becoming more popular.
4) That certain directories only include pay-per-click content.
5) Learn to use engines on a more advanced level. Learn to limit.
It's also important for the search engines to realize:
A) Not everyone uses an engine as a directory/yellow pages to find services and products.
B) For many of us, the content several levels down is often where we want to be.
C) People search differently depending on what they are looking for. (Known Item Search vs. Unknown Item or Subject Search)
D) Useful content exists on sites that will not or are unable to pay-for-inclusion/placement or page optimization.
D) Relevancy does not only mean a click on a link.

Searchable Database--Book Information
Invisible Web

ISBN.nu
ISBN.nu provides access to (FREE) a searchable database with information on over 3 million book titles. At the moment the searchable database is "powered" with data from Books-in-Print/Bowker. In the next few weeks ISBN.nu will switch to data provided by Baker & Taylor. B&T will also provide info on over 750,000 out-of-print titles. After retrieving basic title info, a second click allows you to compare pricing/shipping info from 10 new and used online bookstores on a single page. Click one more time and you're now able to order the material from any of these vendors. Want More? In the future many entries will contain brief annotations, table-of-contents, etc. The BETA interface allows you to search the database by: words in the title, author name, subject, and ISBN . You can also limit your search by publication date and/or publisher. A full-text search will soon be available. Using the MyISBN.nu option allows you to personalize the interface to reflect shipping costs depending on shipping location (a currency converter can be configured to assist searchers outside the U.S.) and the delivery service you select. ISBN.nu is being developed by Seattle based writer (Fortune, Wired, New York Times, Seattle Times) industry commentator, and database guru, Glenn Fleishman.

"The Know-It-All Machine"
This cover story from Lingua Franca tells us about Cyc. From the article, "Ever since 1984, [Doug Lenat], the former Stanford professor has been sitting in Cyc's Austin, Texas, headquarters and writing down the platitudes of our "consensus reality"—all the basic facts that we humans know about the world around us: "Water is wet"; "Everyone has a mother"; "When you let go of things they usually fall." Cyc currently has a database of about 1.5 million of these key assertions. Taken together, they are helping Lenat create what he calls the first true artificial intelligence (AI)—a computer that will be able to speak in English, reason about the world, and, most unnerving, learn on its own. Cyc is easily the biggest and most ambitious AI project on the planet, and by the time it's completed, it will probably have consumed Lenat's entire career." Learn about the work Cyc did with Hotbot.

From Digitisation to Virtual Reality: Is Global Knowledge a Blessing or a Threat?
A speech by Peter Haddad, Director Technical Services Branch, National Library of Australia is an informative and worthwhile read. Here are a few key passages, "The World Wide Web is now thought to contain about 7.1 million unique sites. An estimated 41% of these sites offer content that is freely accessible to the general public, and the Web continues to expand at a rapid pace, tripling in size over the last two years, even though its rate of growth seems to be diminishing over time. The appearance of this new form of publishing and new source of informational content presents libraries and collecting institutions with enormous challenges."..."A number of barriers to the realisation of direct seamless access remain. Firstly, not all of every library’s collection will be digitised and available online. The resources required are simply too great, and the problems of making copyright material freely available too intractable."...Secondly, online subscriber services will continue to stipulate restrictions to widespread access. While this may not trouble a library with a closely defined and easily identified clientele, consider the position of national and public libraries whose constituents are the general population. The present models do not easily lend themselves to providing wide access to all...Thirdly, quality of Web delivered content remains a concern for libraries and educators. There is a role for libraries as “trusted gatekeepers” to develop services comprising quality online resources as opposed to the unevaluated mass of data generated by search engines."

The other, those of us who use the "open web" as one of many research tools available to us. Can and do the two worlds bump against each other? Yes. Can the two worlds exist together? Absolutely! However, it will require those of us in the information research world to be armed with a thorough knowledge of how the engines work, how they differ, what they can and can't do, and how to fully exploit their advanced search capabilities. From the article, "Speaking at the Jupiter Media Metrix Inc. Online Advertising Forum in New York Wednesday, [Ted] Meisel [GoTo.com CEO] said it isn't important whether search engines tell users which listings have been paid for by advertisers. The important thing is that the results are relevant, he said. If they aren't, consumers will move on to other search engines, regardless of whether the listings are paid for or compiled by editorial workers. "Users don't care how they're made," Meisel said. "Most search is influenced by payments in one form or another." I would be curious what AllTheWeb, Google, and WiseNut would have to say.
See Also: I will be speaking, along with many others, at WebSearch University here in D.C. Sessions will cover power searching with the general web search tools, taking advantage of the Invisible Web, and maximizing the value of several fee-based services.

Education (http://education.yahoo.com), a free resource that enables educators at the college, high school and middle school levels to easily create a virtual classroom environment and communication center for their students. Through this new service, professors and teachers can extend the traditional classroom onto the Internet by posting class rosters, calendars, and syllabi, and by connecting with students through private classroom message boards and e-mail. Yahoo! also announced new agreements with three leading providers of education materials -- Bartleby.com, Britannica.com, and Houghton Mifflin Company -- who bring together their resources to create the Yahoo! Another Link To Remove, FindSame is Gone
A quick note to alert VAS&ND users that FindSame.Com along with its owner, Digital Intergrity, are no longer online or in business. What did FindSame do? From the FAQ, "Most search engines work on keywords. They find documents in their database that contain the words you enter anywhere in the document. Current search engines compete with each other by trying to make this list "more relevant" to the topic you wanted to find. Digital Integrity searches in an entirely different way. The search takes as input an entire document and returns to you a list of documents that contain any fragment of that document longer than about one line of text. FindSame was used by many to assist in identifying plagarized materials.

Google Chairman, Eric Schmidt, Named CEO
From the article, "Google is naming highly respected Silicon Valley technology executive Eric Schmidt as chief executive. Mr. Schmidt, 46 years old, whose appointment is expected to be announced Monday, has been chairman since March 26 and most recently served as CEO of software maker Novell Inc...He takes over for co-founder Larry Page, 28, who will become president of products. Co-founder Sergey Brin, 27, will become president of technology...Messrs. Page and Schmidt say they expect their business to grow as companies expand their corporate Web sites. "If we know how to search the Web really well, we can search your company site very well," says Mr. Page. If a company wants search technology on its own Web site, it can pay Google to manage that." The article also mentions Yahoo's licensing of Google content when its directory is unable to produce a hit. These hits are listed as "web page matches". It is important to remember that this service DOES NOT search the same index searched at Google.Com. The Yahoo/Google index is smaller. Additionally, Yahoo/Google doesn't offer the cached version of material accessible at Google.Com

From the article, "Lycos has a bug in its search engine that could allow malicious Web pages to crash users' computers, according to bug hunters. It emerged last week that the way Lycos renders HTML in its search results could allow JavaScript to be launched from the results page without the knowledge of Lycos or the end user. This could be used to merely launch spam pop-up windows or, using documented malicious JavaScript tricks, to crash the user's computer."

"E-Book Saga Is Full of Woe--and a Bit of Intrigue"
From the article, The publishing world's attempts to turn electronic fiction and nonfiction into a lucrative revenue stream has yielded only a trickle of customers. Flaccid sales aside, publishers face even bigger challenges. Digitizing the printed page has put the very nature of books up for grabs, unleashing heated battles among writers, readers, librarians and technologists over who should control electronic books. "There's only one place e-books are popular: the courtroom," said publishing consultant Lorraine Shanley. While no industrywide statistics are being kept on e-book sales, consultant Jim Lichtenberg says the market is practically nonexistent. "There's no standardization in technology," he said. "It's all a big mess. This is like having a car in 1905. It breaks down instantly, which means you have to travel with your own mechanic--and since there are no roads, there's nowhere to go anyway."

Business.Com Moves To a Paid Entry Format
The Business.Com site is moving to a paid entry format for listing in the their directory. According to the site $199 is the cost to have your site reviewed for inclusion. This fee does not guarantee an entry. The current directory will not be purged but an update to the entry will require payment. Also, the site mentions that free submission is no longer possible. However, a program for free submission by "qualified nonprofit organizations" will be available in the next couple of months. The Business.Com directory currently has about 400,000 entries. Let's hope that the Business.Com will remain a quality research for web researchers.

Online News—Aggregators

Resource of the Week: NewsNow
Those of you who like Moreover as an aggregator of breaking news links will want to visit and bookmark NewsNow, another U.K. based resource.
NewsNow compiles information from hundreds of well-know news sources from around the world.
Here are a few of my favorite features:
*Home page updates automatically with new material every 5 minutes.
*Home page divided into 6 categories (Business & Finance, Info Tech, Current Affairs, Sport, Entertainment, U.K. Politics)
*Right side of page contains links to many subject oriented “newswire” compilations. These links also aggregate news from many providers.
*Keyword search engine finds links to articles from the past month (left side of page)
*Each news entry throughout the entire site is labeled with an image of the flag of the country where the news source is based.
*The LiveFeed link (left side of page) opens open a separate window with a virtual ticker that automatically refreshes itself every 5 minutes. The LiveFeed is a great way to quickly identify each news story, for all sections of the site, as they come in. In addition to the flag icon, each entry is color-coded by subject.
*The LiveFeed is also available at: http://www.newsnow.co.uk/-LiveFeed.htm
The only thing this free resource seems to lack is a complete list of the sites where news is culled from. However, a quick tour will result in you identifying many top-level news sources.
Kudos to NewsNow!

"Is The Internet Becoming A Commercial Directory?"
From the article, "GoTo.com's growth and continuing development has seen the majority of its search counterparts follow suit and implement paid inclusion programmes. For instance, Inktomi - one of the web's original crawlers - is increasingly relying on its paid inclusion products to grow its revenue base. Similarly, Looksmart's quarterly earning calls last week re-iterated that the future of the company was in paid listings." Training users to understand the differences between the types of results and the different types of engines is more important now than ever before.
