Statistics File: "Web Surfers Snubbing Search Engines"
You can access additional info about this story via a Web Side Story press release. From the news release, "Since the early days of the Internet, search engines and Web links have played an important part in shuttling surfers from site to site. That trend appears to be on the decline in both the US and overseas, although the percentages can vary between countries." While these numbers say something about user behavior, the statistics are focused on, as many popular web statistics are, utilizing the web as an e-commerce/marketing tool and not as a research tool. Nevertheless, this news illustrates a twist on the law of library science that states "save the time of the reader." Perhaps this law should be amended to "save the time of the reader AND electronic information user." (:

Something New From Lycos: Side Search
This might be a useful time saving and navigation tool. Now, each Lycos result has a second link labeled "Fast Forward". Clicking on this link will divide your browser into two windows. The left window has simple links to 10 hits below the number hit you select. So, if you select hit 41, the box will have links to hits 41-50. The box on the right side of the screen contains the complete page of the "hit" you've selected. In essence, SideSearch allows you to browse a list of search results without having to navigate from the results list to the desired page and then back again. Side Search works with IE and Netscape. You must have javascript enabled. When I tested SideSearch using Opera it didn't work properly.

Web Sites Seen As Terrorist Aids
"A major financial institution this week will receive a report outlining the extent to which its Web site exposes it to potential attacks by Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda organization and other terrorists. The audit, produced by security consulting firm Stroz Associates LLC, is one of the first of its kind in the private sector. It marks a growing trend by companies in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks to assess whether content on their Web sites increases their risk of being targeted by terrorist organizations. The amount of sensitive data uncovered by Stroz Associates at various corporate Web sites is startling, said Eric Friedberg, managing director at the New York-based firm and a former computer crime coordinator at the U.S. Department of Justice."

"Search Engine's Display of Copyright Photos Ruled Infringement"
From the AP story, "An Internet search engine violated a professional photographer's copyright by displaying full-sized images of his work through ``inline linking,'' a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found that small, low-quality thumbnail images were covered by the ``fair use'' provision of the Copyright Act, but reversed a lower court opinion that found the display of larger high-quality images also was protected. The appeals court sent the case back to the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California to determine damages and the need for an injunction against the search engine company, Arriba Soft Corp., now known as Ditto.com."

The Boston Globe Chats With Google's CEO Eric Schmidt
As you'll read, Schmidt sees Google being the one search solution mechanism for all information. In responding to a question about the future of Google, Schmidt says, "So the obvious questions is: Where does Google go from here? And the answer is ... search. Let me give you an example: Are all the world's governments' documents online? Can you search all the government records of all the countries in which you're an international correspondent? No. Wouldn't your life be more effective, wouldn't information transfer be better, if all the information was online? Absolutely. What about all those premium services? I'm thinking of, like, the LexisNexis types. Wouldn't it be nice if some of that information were online and available in an integrated form? Maybe you'd have to pay for it in some way, we haven't figured it out yet. ... The mission of the company is [retrieving] all of the world's information. It's not all the world's information currently available on the Web, it's all of the world's information. So what I do is I sit down every day and I think about, `What information do I need to get through the day and why isn't it on Google?' And, you know, you just lop one [thing] off after another."
